I produce skins, like snakes do. Only I don't abandon them around. I keep them. I wear them all at the same time.

Rian Traenor - A1 [The Death Of Rave]

Not all deaths are equal.
I have seen a certain kind in your eyes,
as to see through a deep black pond.
I have thought death in your eyes will pass me by
and let me stay there, just looking at your eyes.
(which is by itself a sort of death)
But, being realistic, we all well know it will take me,
because that's what all kind of deaths do,
they take people's breath away.

Pray against the crazy stream of thought

This is all she's  got so far:

What I share with [poets in my generation] is ambition; what I dispute is its definition. I do not think that more information always makes a richer poem. I am attracted to ellipsis, to the unsaid, to suggestion, to eloquent, deliberate silence. The unsaid, for me, exerts great power: often I wish an entire poem could be made in this vocabulary. It is analogous to the unseen for example, to the power of ruins, to works of art either damaged or incomplete. Such works inevitably allude to larger contexts; they haunt because they are not whole, though wholeness is implied: another time, a world in which they were whole, or were to have been whole, is implied. There is no moment in which their first home is felt to be the museum. … It seems to me that what is wanted, in art, is to harness the power of the unfinished. All earthly experience is partial. Not simply because it is subjective, but because that which we do not know, of the universe, of mortality, is so much more vast than that which we do know. What is unfinished or has been destroyed participates in these mysteries. The problem is to make a whole that does not forfeit this power.

*

The zuihitsu is a classic genre of Japanese literature that emerged sometime in the Heian Period (794-1185 AD), first seen in Sei Shonagon’s The Pillow Book. The word zuihitsu, which is made up of the kanji for “to follow” and “brush,” is usually translated as “following the brush” or “random jottings” (Hahn “Compass”). As such, the zuihitsu generally consists of a series of loosely connected, fragmented essays, ideas, word pictures, and poems. And, while the first zuihitsu dealt with court life in Heian Period Japan, they could also focus on any number of traditional Japanese themes, including the appreciation of the changing of the seasons, and the Buddhist preoccupation with the impermanence of the material world (as seen in The Pillow Book, Chomei’s Hojoki, and others).

I have a ghost. He lives in my house, or as he would say, I live in his. When he was living a human life, he used to be a flamenco teacher. He died in this house and then I took this place and I also made it mine.

At the beginning, I never imagined it was a shared place. My ghost helped me acknowledge it. Apparently, it is OK, in ghost's codes, to scare the hell out of people to make them know they are not alone.

With time, we both have learned to admit the presence of the other. We also have tried to stay each one in his or her own dimension –this is harder for him to keep than it is for me–.

In November I build with flowers, food and candles, an altar de muertos for him. This has helped me to get to know him better.  (And I can say by now that I am sure that when I say that I have a ghost, he thinks it's the other way around, that he is the one who has me. )

I am not your Ophelia II

JAY-Z - The Story of O.J.

Live all you can; it's a mistake not to. It doesn't so much matter what you do in particular, so long as you have your life. If you haven't had that what have you had? This place and these impressions — mild as you may find them to wind a man up so; all my impressions of Chad and of people I've seen at his place — well, have had their abundant message for me, have just dropped that into my mind. I see it now. I haven't done so enough before — and now I'm old; too old at any rate for what I see. Oh I do see, at least; and more than you'd believe or I can express. It's too late. And it's as if the train had fairly waited at the station for me without my having had the gumption to know it was there. Now I hear its faint receding whistle miles and miles down the line. What one loses one loses; make no mistake about that. The affair — I mean the affair of life — couldn't, no doubt, have been different for me; for it's at the best a tin mould, either fluted and embossed, with ornamental excrescences, or else smooth and dreadfully plain, into which, a helpless jelly, one's consciousness is poured — so that one 'takes' the form as the great cook says, and is more or less compactly held by it: one lives in fine as one can. Still, one has the illusion of freedom; therefore don't be, like me, without the memory of that illusion. I was either, at the right time, too stupid or too intelligent to have it; I don't quite know which.

"There is no authentic live. My life is never my life, is my life for the others, is always other’s life. Is always my image in the eyes of the others. To be alive means to be exposed to the eyes of the others. “

SONNET (silenced)

Olena Kalytiak Davis,

with her unearned admixable beauty
she sat up on the porch and asked for (f)light;
answerable only to poetry—
and love—to make it thru the greyblue night

blew smoke into words and even whiter ghosts
that could see what others in this broad dark
could not: she set to make of nothing most,
better: an everenlightening mark:

ghost gave her this: a piece of flint: that if
you rubbed the right way,
the lightlessness would come down, give up, lift—
and then there would be nothing left to say.

o sterilize the lyricism of
my sentence: make me plain again my love

Why I Don’t Mention Flowers When Conversations with My Brother Reach Uncomfortable Silences

Natalie Diaz

Forgive me, distant wars, for bringing
flowers home.
         —
Wisława Szymborska

In the Kashmir mountains,
my brother shot many men,
blew skulls from brown skins,
dyed white desert sand crimson.
What is there to say to a man
who has traversed such a world,
whose hands and eyes have
betrayed him?
Were there flowers there? I asked.
This is what he told me:
In a village, many men
wrapped a woman in a sheet.
She didn’t struggle.
Her bare feet dragged in the dirt.
They laid her in the road
and stoned her.
The first man was her father.
He threw two stones in a row.
Her brother had filled his pockets
with stones on the way there.
The crowd was a hive
of disturbed bees. The volley
of stones against her body
drowned out her moans.
Blood burst through the sheet
like a patch of violets,
a hundred roses in bloom.
